Bye Bye Blog

Thanks to everyone who has stopped by here since I started this blog in 2010.  I still enjoy quilting and will continue to post pictures of my works-in-progress occasionally on Instagram or Facebook, but I really don't like blogging anymore. I prefer to spend my writing time working on my books.  I recently started the first draft of my third novel.
I'll leave the blog up for a while as a reference, but will likely take it down eventually.
I have a website with information about both my writing and quilting.  Sometime soon I hope to add a quilt photo gallery to it.  It has been great to meet so many quilty friends through this blog.  All best wishes!  Riel

Sew a Modern Halloween Cover Reveal -- Coming June, 2017

Yes, June, 2017 -- a long time from now.  But, the publisher (C&T Publishing) put the book up on Amazon for pre-order, so that means that I can share it here.  I'm sure it comes as little surprise to many of you that my next quilting book is a Halloween book.  I love Halloween, and have made more than 60 (yes 60, I counted for my author bio) Halloween quilts and smaller projects over the years -- many of which I've shown on the blog.
I am excited to share the designs in the book.  It is so interesting to me to see the finished projects and trace the inspiration to earlier things I've made.  My debut quilting exhibit "A 1/4 Inch Scream" was a huge inspiration for me.  But, these are fun and fast projects -- more modern, clean, easy to make, and certainly not only quilts and wall hangings, but other things for throughout your home.  I have also calmed down a little on my crazy colours and love, love the orange, black and white mixed with grey and cream.  The cover photo actually shows a nice little sneak peek of some of the projects ... :-)  There is still work for me to do on the book, but it is fun to see it gradually come together.

A Fall Finish

A Fall finish!  I made this top last year, but didn't get it quilted, bound and 100% done until today.  It is a wall hanging.
It's my original design combining so many of my favourite quilting elements -- Halloween, hexies and selvages!
Each hexy "leaf" on my selvage tree is a Halloween fussy cut.
This has more rich deep fall colours rather than the bright orange I usually use.  I think the background fabric really works.
Here you can see that I added a little hand quilting -- large stiches done in a variegated perle cotton.  I also did a bit of machine quilting around the outside.
I am still undecided if I will blog a little, lot, or not at all, BUT be sure to come back in a day or two for a fun piece of news I'm excited to share.
Thanks for stopping by.  Posted by Riel Nason

My New Novel is in Stores!
My novel is out earlier than expected and is in Canadian stores now.  I'll be here at my house trying to stay calm :-)  I'm still on blogging break until who knows when.  Hope you are all having a great summer!

Ahhh Summer: Time for the Annual Blogging Break

No summer blogging for me, per usual.  But I will post now and then on Instagram and Facebook (links on my sidebar) if you'd like to follow along.  I hope everyone has a fabulous summer.  Happy Quilting!

Orange Scraps and Selvages Quilt!

So this is the latest -- orange scrappy squares and pink, red, orange and purple selvages!  Just the bright colours I love.
I have made HST quilts with selvages before (I give my method for making HST selvage squares in detail in my book Modern Selvage Quilting) but this time I rotated the squares so that the selvages sat on the top of the blocks.  My instinct is always to put them on the bottom of the blocks, so that is new for me.
I have started sewing the rows together, but I am still rearranging a bit as I go.
It should be a very cheerful quilt when it's all finished.
And in other news, I am back to using my regular machine again (although I have nothing but good things to say about my daughter's little Hello Kitty Janome I was using).
Happy Quilting!  Also, I should mention that I am very soon going to be taking my summer blogging break, which may or may not turn into a permanent blogging break, I haven't decided yet.  I will still be posting on my Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter though if you are interested in following along. All the links for these are on the blog sidebar.

Modern Selvage Quilting Blog Tour: The Final Stop and Giveaway

The Modern Selvage Medallion quilt waaaaaay back when it was still on my design wall.  The complete pattern is in the book.
My turn!  Although I really don't know how much more I need to say.  I have been wonderfully spoiled by the bloggers who participated in the tour.  (Complete list in previous post)  Day after day I read wonderful things about the book.  I am so pleased to have had such generous and eloquent quilty friends providing reviews.
One thing that especially made me happy is the recurring theme throughout the other posts that the book provided more than just patterns to make -- it gave all the information you needed technique-wise to completely do your own thing if so desired.  I aimed for that.  I wanted the book to truly feel like a book that could be read and was packed full of good basic information, rather than just an instruction manual to make a specific set of patterns. (But that said, there are 17 great patterns in it too)
Placemats before the binding was all sewn.

Child's Selvage Maze quilt before it was quilted
Selvage quilting isn't a fad.  It's too late for that.  It's here to stay.  And if you have fabric, you have selvages.  So please, save them and use them.  They are modern scraps -- easy as that.
Launching the book at my LQS a few weeks back.  All the quilts in the picture are in the book.
So, finally, the publisher is offering a book to one lucky commenter.  The publisher, C&T Publishing is in the US, so if a US commenter wins, they will send a paper copy book.  If someone from anywhere outside the US wins, they will send an ecopy of the book to the winner.
About the comment: Often in the past, I've used silly questions for giveaways.  Why stop now?  To enter, let's say you're writing a kids'  book about a quilter or sewist or fabric artist of some sort.  What is the main character's name?  For example, I'd say Sally Selvage!  That's it.  Just suggest a name and then the winner will be chosen randomly.  Good Luck! (One comment per person.  Closes Tuesday, May 24 5pm AST)
